My Limited Edition

Interior

I got the car from an individual in Illinois. I was looking for a 97 Limited Edition Sport. I saw this one on Autotrader. Low miles (61,000), right color, lots of equipment, brand new Goodyears, and best of all a great price! I checked with the bank and gave him a call. It was kind of a race, according to the seller someone else was also looking at it. My girlfriend and I raced to St. Louis and met him at 8:30am. I looked the car over, and though it was not quite as slick as originally advertised, (they never are) it was definitely a nice car. Gave the man a cashiers check and drove it home!

The goal for this car is simple. Ive always liked the way Mustangs (in the old days anyway) could be anything from a simple economy car, to a full blown muscle car. T-birds to (in the old days). Lately the Mustang has been getting all the glory, while the T-bird has been forgotten. However what if Ford hadn't forgotten about the Thunderbird? What if they had offered more than just a V-6 or V-8? What if they had offered a Thunderbird GT? I plan to answer that question and build one. It is going to have a high performance yet reliable 4.6L V-8, stiffer springs and sway bars for handling, better brakes for stopping the power, and of course an upgraded interior. Ford made a feeble attempt at beginning this with the "Sport" package. I plan on finishing it.

A few things about the car since I took ownership

Problems corrected upon purchase of the car:

  • Steering and Braking vibration corrected with new brake rotors
  • Replaced the broken antenna mast
  • New brake calipers and rotors on rear
  • Transmission "shudder" was repaired with fresh fluid (Mercon V), filter, and cooler
  • Flushed the brake system with fresh brake fluid
  • Front end alignment corrected slight pull to right

To upgrade the car from a "Sport" to the GT that Ford should have built, I plan to upgrade some of the things that Ford ignored, and even some of the things that Ford improved. This will not happen in any particular order, just as I acquire the funds, and the parts. Following the above list:

Current upgrades to the car
  • E-350 Auxiliary Transmission Cooler
  • Mark VIII Aluminum Driveshaft
  • 3.27 Limited Slip rear differential
  • '89 SuperCoupe front and rear sway bars
  • SHO 150 mph Speedometer
  • Polyurethane Differential Bushings and Tranny Mounts
  • SuperCoupe Side Ground Effects
  • 255/50/ZR16 BF Goodrich G-Force Sports

Planned upgrades to the car include:

  • Mark VIII flexplate & Torque Converter**
  • KYB Shocks*
  • 3.55 Trac-Loc gears**
I have the parts ordered for a lot of these upgrades. I'm just waiting for them to arrive.

The upgrades marked with a "*" are the ones I have ordered and are waiting on, the ones with "**" have arrived, and are waiting installation.
